Los Angeles Valley College Community Services Center

Pankow provided design-build services for Los Angeles Valley College’s Community Services Center. The new building is made up of three functional zones: Instructional zone with dividable lecture hall, computer lab and arts and crafts teaching spaces. Activity zone with gymnastics center and two large multi-purpose rooms for rock wall climbing, dance, yoga, martial arts, community wellness and student activities Administrative zone with community services program, support spaces and offices.

Longmont Grades PK-8 School (Timberline School)

This project was completed to combine the former Loma Linda Elementary and Heritage Middle Schools into a new prekindergarten through 8 campus. The new Timberline P-8 school embraces Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) opportunities as well as a continued International Baccalaureate (IB) focus. Grounded in the rigors of educational excellence the school is planned to open in August 2013. The construction is being accomplished while the schools remain operational.

Lakeside School, Multiple Projects

Lewis recently completed five years of projects at Seattle’s premier private school. The final phase was the new Paul G. Allen Athletics Center, a 63,535 square foot addition with a gym seating 800, sports medicine, a weight room, locker rooms, and rooftop photovoltaics. Prior to this project, Lewis completed the following work on campus: the renovation and expansion of Allen-Gates Hall (named after the Microsoft founders, who first met at Lakeside), including science classrooms; the historic renovation of Bliss Hall, with seismic, restoration, and MEP; and smaller renovations to Moore and Fix Halls.

Elon University Global Neighborhood

Sitting on the quiet shores of Lake Mary Nell in Elon, North Carolina, Elon University’s innovative Global Village transforms the residential experience for undergraduate on-campus living. With five residence halls containing 600 total beds plus the unique Global Amenities building, the Village fosters a community that allows living and learning to become synonymous.

Choate Construction delivers the project in two distinct phases, encompassing the construction of five residence halls and one amenities building. Phase one initiated the construction and delivery of the first two residence halls, while the second phase delivered the remaining three residence halls and the Village’s Global Amenities building a large, multi-use facility located in the center of the complex. With cross-channel collaboration in mind, Global Village offers students the option to live in several language learning communities, including La Casa de Espanol, La Masion Francaise, Japanese House, La Casa Italiana, and Deutsches Haus.

Designed and constructed to provide the ultimate in student comfort and convenience, the interior of the residence halls includes a combination of single and dual occupancy rooms with adjoining bathrooms, spacious common areas, hall kitchens, and classrooms. The Global Amenities Building contains the Isabella Cannon International Centre as well as faculty offices, ample study rooms, a grand ballroom, and other large gathering spaces. Construction on the project included shallow foundations, load-bearing metal stud framed structure, cast-in-place elevated concrete slabs, light gauge roof trusses, shingle roofs, and brick facades.

Fairplay P-12 School (BEST Program)

Located in the rural mountain town of Fairplay, Colorado, the 125,000 sq. ft. project provides a new state-of-the-art P-12 education campus. The project was completed in several phases. The campus features separate facilities for the Elementary, Middle and High School as well as new athletic complex. The campus includes covered walkways and a centralized playground providing maximum security and safety for the students.

The new facility also features a 4,700 sq. ft. off-site Athletic Complex comprised of new synthetic turf football field, crusher fine running track, grandstands, and athletic support building.

A portion of the remodel renovation was within the Historic Edith Teter School House built in 1898 (this is the oldest school house in the State of Colorado.

The Fairplay P -12 School is LEED Gold certificated and utilizes an innovative wood-fired biomass boiler as a renewable energy source.

Discovery Hall

Lewis constructed a 74,000 square foot building that houses 11 science labs, several classrooms, a 200-person lecture hall, and faculty offices at the center of the active UW Bothell campus. Specialized areas include a motion-capture lab and a “collaboratory” that enables group learning. The project was a case study in maximizing integrated teaming and Lean within Washington’s GC/CM contracting law. Project elements that enabled timely design and construction included: shared goals between Lewis, the UW, and the design team, working together continually and without “silos” , fully leveraging BIM to expedite design and quality construction; and last-planner scheduling.

Colorado State University Lory Student Center Revitalization

Over 20,000 people pass through the Lory Student Center (LSC) every day, making the more than 50-year-old building one of the busiest locations in northern Colorado. The student center is the hub of activity on campus for students, faculty and staff; it houses student services, dining facilities, stores, meeting rooms, ballrooms, art galleries and a theater.

To keep up with the needs of a growing student body, attract new students and address an aging HVAC system, CSU renovated the 160,000-square-foot structure and added nearly 70,000 square feet to the center. The university’s goal was to create a flexible-use space, improve energy performance and keep people connected to the outside vistas, which include a lagoon, outdoor amphitheater, sculpture garden and the Rocky Mountains.

Colorado School of Mines – Ben H. Parker Student Center Renovation

Saunders Construction recently completed complex renovations to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Ben H. Parker Student Center. Renovations took place on 60-percent of the existing building and remained open to CSM students and faculty as construction took place.

The project was completed in two phases. The first phase, on the west wing of the building, was renovated to include a larger bookstore, a remodeled kitchen and food court. After Phase 1 was complete, the project team moved on to the east wing of the building to complete Phase 2 renovations of an Old Bookstore the Digger Den Cafeteria. Phase two was renovated to include several organization spaces.

Center for Learning and Student Success

The Center Building was renovated by Lewis in multiple phases to create a modern new learning commons and student union the Center for Learning and Student Success. In addition to a new open and airy learning commons, the CLASS project updated the food services area, replaced the out-of-date bookstore with a new Titan Store, and created a new user-friendly plaza, which greatly improved access in and around the building. Energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems contributed to the project’s LEED Silver certification goal.

Anschutz Health and Wellness Center

A new, LEED Gold certified, 92,500-square-foot facility is an innovative, state-of-the art research, education and patient care facility located on the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus.

Major building elements include: aerobics exercise pool, saunas, whirlpool spas, locker room facilities, 15,000-square-foot fitness equipment area, including free weights, laboratory fitness equipment area, with calibrated and specialized fitness equipment for prescribed programs, walking/running track, nutritional kitchen producing take-home prescribed meals, demonstration kitchen, bistro area, 20 clinical exam rooms, two minor procedure rooms, -80 degree freezer farm with alarmed UPS system for tissue storage, blood work laboratory, testing labs, DEXA room, physician and intern offices and conference rooms, and a board room opening out to roof garden for events.

The building’s “L” shape was dictated by the location of the existing Fisher House, short term stay facility for Veterans, at the southwest corner of the site. Our project involved rerouting utilities to and from the Fisher House and being a “good neighbor” by being cognizant of maintaining parking areas and delivery routes to their facility, along with daily start and stop time constraints for construction for noise mitigation.
