Founded in 1839, this historic renovation and addition included a preschool, 2 story Narthex, 999 seat sanctuary, and adult education classrooms. Harmonizing the 1840’s historic sanctuary with the new construction, all while enhancing functionality and space for the growing congregation, provided a unique construction experience to add to Choate’s historic renovation resume.
A particular challenge on this project arose by having to work in and around a fully operational day care, church staff, and various congregation activities for a full year. Through daily communication with the staff and weekly newsletters to the congregation explaining current construction activities and parties would be affected, this project was completed successfully.
SIMT is the premiere technical service provider and training facility for industry in the southeastern portion of the United States. The 18,000 SF Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC) and associated sitework includes special features such as fiber optic, networking and computer hardware training labs, four breakout session rooms, an executive briefing center and the campus data center. The key focus of the AMC is to provide training via simulation facilities that will link engineering to manufacturing technology as well as training and application of the latest computer technologies. This treatment center offers a chemotherapy suite, radiation-oncology suite, shared waiting rooms, conference rooms, and a library. The linear accelerator is contained in a specially designed poured in-place-concrete vault with lead shielding for radiation protection. Other special features include a concrete vault used as radiation protection as well as lead shielding for radiation oncology equipment, automatic entrance doors, an open two-story waiting room, and open two-story conference rooms with suspended soffits housing audio visual equipment and an operable partition.
Burnett Womack Clinical Sciences Building was a long-awaited project for the UNC Medical School. This renovation of a 9-story building in Chapel Hill’s campus houses new research laboratories, a BSL3 laboratory, clinical space, radiation science, new office space, and a full mechanical floor.
Ahold Information Services (AIS), located on a twenty-two acre site, consists of a four story, 135,000 SF Class A corporate office building, a 65,000 SF, single story data center, and a 15,000 SF “streetscape” spine that adjoins the two facilities and contains a fitness center and a full service cafeteria with both public and private dining.
Once awarded Ahold, Choate played a very active role in the completion of the project design and final budget as well as begin the fast track process by commencing with sitework. It was our goal to manage the design so completion of the documents meshed with the current status of the construction and not cause any delays in the procurement of materials. With this approach, the entire project team was made aware of the construction schedule on a weekly basis and when scopes of work were required to be released. This enabled the Architects and Engineers to continue their design while at the same time being aware of what our staff in the field was going to need at any given date.
Due to the complexity and detail of the project, extreme attention had to be taken to maintain the schedule, provide a quality finished project and assure that the construction site was a safe working environment. No OSHA citations were ever received. The data center, including dual 4000 amp primary service transformers, each equipped with a Trans Voltient Surge Suppresser (TVSS), dual 2500 KVA (2000 KW) emergency generators and dual battery backup (1500 KVA), Uninterrupted Power Sources (UPS), twenty-eight Power Distribution Units (PDU’s), twenty-five self-contained Computer Room Air Condition Units (CRAC’s), and much more, was successfully completed due to the awareness Choate pays its projects.
